Rooted in Exploration
Taproot Theatre Company exists to create theatre that explores…
EXPLORE (ik-splôr’) – to search or travel through for the purpose of discovery
We like to consider ourselves explorers. We can’t get enough of big, uncomfortable questions that introduce us to new friends and ignite great discussions. So as part of deepening our roots in the city, we invited community members to join the conversation. Here’s what happened:
In Spring 2011 we produced The Beams are Creaking, the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The play exposed critical questions, startlingly relevant to our contemporary world. We found leaders in the fields of theology, philosophy, and a few Bonhoeffer experts to guide a free community discussion entitled “Why Bonhoeffer? Why Now?” Every seat was full.

As we explored the issues of race relations in Brownie Points (May 2011), we knew audiences would brim with questions. We partnered with the John Perkins Center for Reconciliation to plan weekly post-show guided “Conversations,” and to host a one-night event called “Neighbors and Strangers,” which was recorded and broadcast on Seattle Arts Channel, reaching an audience of thousands. (You can watch the discussion here.)
We’re not done. This next season will bring new opportunities to explore, new ideas to discover. We want to become a driving force for big questions in this city.
Will you help us continue to Explore important themes?
